Throughout July and August BBC Radio Derby are running their 'It Starts With You' awareness campaign focused on hereditary and genetic cancers, encouraging families to discuss medical histories, understand risks regarding mutations like BRCA and Lynch syndrome, and seek early testing.
The It Starts With You campaign is being led by Breakfast Show presenter Becky Measures who has shared her personal story of carrying the BRCA1 gene mutation and undergoing a preventative double mastectomy.
Becky's story
In 2004, Becky Measures found out that she carries the BRCA1 gene mutation, meaning she has a significantly increased risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Two years later, at just 24 years old, Becky made the decision to undergo a preventative double mastectomy, which made her the youngest woman at the time in UK to have the operation.
Becky's mum become the first person to ever have the same surgery after discovering 9 out of 12 family members had breast and ovarian cancer. She also carried the gene BRCA1 gene.
Becky says "Neither of us had cancer, but we knew the risk we faced, and we chose to act before the disease had the chance to. It wasn’t a decision I took lightly. It involved counselling, difficult conversations and major surgery.
"There were moments of fear and uncertainty, but there was also hope and the belief that I was giving myself the best possible chance of a healthy future".
Now, 20 years later, Becky is a proud mum of two children, and describes herself as healthy, happy and excited about what life has to offer.
That experience changed the direction of my life and ignited a passion for raising awareness of hereditary cancer and helping other families understand the importance of knowing their history, recognising their risk and making informed choices. Hereditary Cancer
Most people are unaware of their risk of inherited genetic cancers. Understanding your family history can change that.
Inherited genetic cancers occur early. Typically in people’s 30s, 40s and 50s, rather than in old age.
It is true that healthy lifestyle choices matter and support overall wellbeing — but they do not change inherited genetic cancer risk.
Around 1 in 125 people globally carry an inherited genetic cancer risk - yet more than 90% are unaware.
The three most common gene mutations are Lynch Syndrome, BRCA, and Familial Prostate Cancer. Carriers of the mutations can only be identified by genetic testing.

Roadshows and community events
BBC Radio Derby’s ‘It Starts With You’ campaign aims to shine a spotlight on hereditary cancers. The campaign is encouraging people to check themselves for any signs of cancer.
Following previous community events in Darley Dale and Burton, you can find out more about inherited breast cancer, including health advice and support, at an upcoming event at Age UK in Chaddesden Park (opens in a new tab) on 19 August 2026.
Among those attending the event is Vicki Kiesel, Lead Genetic Counsellor within the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) Clinical Genetics Service, based at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
The Archers on BBC Radio 4 has been exploring cancer genetics. When Pip discovered a lump in her breast, old fears were revived for her mother Ruth, who survived breast cancer many years earlier. BRCA genes can lead to a higher chance of developing cancer and Pip begins to worry she may be at risk. It Starts With You Choir
If cancer has affected you or a loved one, and you can hold a note (or are enthusiastic!!) – BBC Radio Derby want you in their choir.
A Grammy award winning composer who’s worked with Celine Dion and Gary Barlow is writing the song and BBC Radio Derby want to record it and maybe even perform it.
