Apprenticeships can be a great way to gain hands on experience of a career while learning on the job. Our Cambridge lab is involved in the apprenticeship programme at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) and is able to take those with GCSEs or equivalent for Level 3 technical apprenticeships.
Laboratory technician apprenticeship
The laboratory technician is a Level 3 apprenticeship which is the equivalent to A-Levels. This apprenticeship is open to external candidates interested in starting a career in genetics.
Apprenticeship take 27 months to complete including the End Point Assessment (EPA). Entry requirements are grade 4/C in Maths and English, and a good GCSE or equivalent in Science.
Apprentices work four days a week in the lab with one day dedicated to learning. This is either attending lectures for college or new skills developed in work. Managers and colleagues will help to support the apprentices through their qualification to achieve and develop within their role.
Apprentices will be proactively involved in finding solutions to problems and supporting the lab with the day to day running of the tests, through maintenance and organisation. Upon achieving the laboratory technician Level 3 and applying to a banded role, apprentices can further progress on to the degree apprenticeship.
