Every year on 5 May we celebrate the incredible work of midwives, who play a vital role in supporting families through one of life’s most important journeys.
Genomics is fundamental to the role of the midwife, as it allows midwives to predict and prepare for situations in pregnancy to better protect and care for the parent and child.
As genomics is now included in the NMC standards of proficiency for midwives (opens in a new tab) and, with rapid advances being made in the field all the time, it is important that all midwives can talk confidently about it and understand its relevance before, during and after pregnancy.

Generation Study
One of the most exciting developments in Genomic Medicine with the maternity space is the national Generation Study.
Nationally over 55,000 babies have been recruited to be screened for over 200 rare conditions. In our region 7 NHS Trusts are actively recruiting families across 11 hospital sites.
Maternity services toolkits
At East Genomics we have developed a number of toolkits and resources to support healthcare staff in the application of genomics within maternity and midwifery services.
Networks and Communities
We have a number of networks and communities open to Midwives who want to find out more about genomic testing, increase their knowledge and connect with colleagues:
