The webinar 'Understanding and using the Sickle Cell Clinical Pathway Initiative (CPI)' will take place on Thursday 21 May 2026 at 11am.
Sickle cell trait is common in the UK, yet many carriers receive limited information after newborn screening – leaving gaps when they later need reproductive, clinical, or family guidance.
To help close this gap, NHS England has developed the Sickle Cell Clinical Pathway Initiative (CPI): a structured, flexible competency framework that supports healthcare professionals to deliver consistent, culturally sensitive care.
This webinar is aimed at GPs, midwives, nurses, health visitors, community teams and anyone involved in screening or supporting individuals and families affected by sickle cell.
Speakers will include:
- Dr Rossby Awadzi, GP Registrar, London North-West University Healthcare NHS Trust
- Dr Edward Miller, Education Specialist, Genomics Education Programme, NHS England
- Tim Omo-Bare, Head of Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Improvement Programme, NHS England
What you’ll gain
- A clear overview of the CPI and how it supports care
- Practical guidance on explaining carrier status with confidence
- Tools for navigating cultural and family dynamics with sensitivity
- Signposting to recommended training at key stages – from preconception through newborn follow up
