International Nurses Day 12 May 2025

Monday 12th May 2025 is International Nurses Day. Below we highlight the important role nurses play in genomic medicine, as well as some events and links to further information and support.

Nurses are integral to the healthcare environment. Within genomics, they are able to play a critical role; listening to patients, observing symptoms, spotting family histories and referring through relevant pathways.

This month we are celebrating the vital role that nurses (International Nurses Day, 12 May), and midwives (International Day of the Midwife, 5 May) play - not just in patient care, but in shaping the future of genomic medicine.

From taking detailed family histories to identifying inherited conditions, nurses and midwives are at the frontline of genomic healthcare. Whether supporting informed reproductive decisions, recognising genetic risks in newborns, or guiding patients through precision medicine, their expertise is essential in translating genomic insights into meaningful care. As genomics continues to transform healthcare, nurses and midwives stand as advocates, educators, and innovators—ensuring that every patient receives care tailored to their unique genetic story.

Thank you for your dedication, compassion, and ever-growing impact on the field of genomics.
