My name's Liz Lawrence and I'm the programme lead for the Regional Genomic Practitioner Service. Our service was created in 2024 by the East of England Cancer Alliance Head of programmes, Gini Melesi. Our directive is to bring genomics into the cancer workforce, aligning with national policy, bringing vital science and research developments to our patients.
How are you 'creating connections' for clinicians?
We've built a number of connections with the cancer clinical teams across the region. We cover 6 Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), 18 hospital trusts and many primary care networks. This has been a two-pronged approach. We've been able to present our message at many network and cancer committee events.
As well as creating a national platform for the service, we've been working at ground level with staff to be able to implement robust pathways that are sustainable, aligning with the national 10 year plan which sets out the ambition that genomics should be business as usual within the NHS.
My team's nursing and workforce experience has given us the platform to be able to gain a granular insight into how genomics is understood and where the gaps for education need to be addressed.
