Non-urgent advice: East Genomics E-learning platform

The East Genomics E-learning platform is designed for healthcare professionals looking to develop their knowledge and understanding of genomic medicine, across a range of topics and conditions.

Modules include:

  • Patient Choice: discussing whole genome sequencing
  • Genetic Testing for Hereditary Breast Cancer
  • Genetic testing for Inherited Cardiac Conditions
  • Genetic Carrier Testing in Primary Care
  • Rapid Prenatal Exome Sequencing

Content is updated regularly.

Access the East Genomics E-learning platform (registration required).

Genomics Training Academy

The Genomics Training Academy (GTAC) provides training and education to the specialist genomics laboratory and clinical workforce within the UK, including bioinformaticians, clinical geneticists, clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, genetic counsellors and genetic technologists.

You can find out more about the GTAC on the genomics education programme website (opens in a new tab), including how to enrol (opens in a new tab) and FAQs (opens in a new tab).

You can also find out more about careers (opens in a new tab)and the various roles for scientists in genomic testing and the interpretation of results.

General resources for healthcare professionals

The Genomic Education Programme (GEP) has a number of resources designed to help healthcare professionals bring the benefits of genomic medicine to patients.

Consent and confidentiality guidelines and training

The referring clinician must ensure they have an appropriate discussion of genomic testing and the possible implications for a patient and their family members according to the consent and confidentiality in genomic medicine guidelines. (opens in a new tab)

A record of this discussion must be retained within the patient record when a genomic test is ordered, as outlined in the patient choice consent framework (opens in a new tab). This competency framework identifies the core competencies required to facilitate and consent patients for germline genomic tests.

Training is available online via the East Genomics e-learning platform.

Clinicians must complete this training prior to ordering Whole Genome Sequencing.

Genomics toolkit for primary care

The Genomics Toolkit supports increasing understanding, raise awareness of genomic medicine and support primary care with increased knowledge of how genomics can contribute to improving patient care in a 'genomics era'.

This toolkit is designed to be used by the entire clinical primary care team. The content development has been informed by the relevant RCGP Curriculum Statement, and on the findings from a Delphi survey which identified knowledge, skills and attitudes in genomics required by the primary care team.
