Lead: NHS North East and Yorkshire GMS Alliance
This project aims to support nurses and midwives to drive the strategic and systematic integration of genomics across nursing and midwifery practice in the NHS in England.
This will be achieved by having nurses and midwives included in oversight groups for national transformation projects, identifying clinical pathways for these professions to lead in and to utilise education and training to raise awareness and confidence.
Nurses and midwives are already playing a vital role in embedding genomics in routine care and delivering better outcomes for patients. This project will build on this to further the impact genomics can have on patient care.
The pathways focused on in 2021/2022 were monogenic diabetes and Familial Hypocholesterolaemia. In 2022/23 these will be lung, colorectal, breast and ovarian cancer, cystic renal disease, neuro-epilepsy and feto-maternal pathways.
